Tutorial: Adding a Stroke to a Word

I don't know about you, but I love multiple-word titles that use more than one alpha. That's how this technique was born...well that and laziness. While I like using more than one alpha, I hate taking the time to find an alpha that works with the kit and the alpha that came with the kit. That's how I started using strokes. When I first started digi-scrapping, I used Elements and strokes are easy to find and use on photos from the very beginning in that program. After about a month of learning how to digi-scrap, I took a year and half break. When I returned, I jumped in with CS3 (this tutorial is done in PhotoShop CS3). It was a whole different ball game and strokes aren't as easy to find and use for the first time. After about six months, I finally figured out how to use strokes. Once I figured it out though, a whole new world opened up to me... That brings us to today's tutorial on how to add strokes to words. Everything used on the page shown in this tutorial is GG's newest kit Boys and their Toys. (Click on images to make them bigger...)

I almost always leave the title on my pages until the very end. So here's my layout waiting for the finishing touches:

Next you'll need to decide on the color you want your word written in and the color you want your stroke in. I always select my font color by using the eye dropper tool and selecting a color from the kit/page.

For this page, I selected the color of the blue ric rac. For my stroke I selected the color that is around "Longhorn" or the alpha that came with the kit. Of course you could choose practically any color under the sun for either color, but I personally stick to white, cream, tan or very neutral colors for the stoke. Once you have your colors selected, set your font color to the foreground and your stroke color to the background. Then select your type tool and pick a font. I chose Everytime I Miss You for this page. My go-to favorites are CK Cursive and Thinking of You. Now type in your word(s). Play with the font size until you get your word(s) the size you want.

The next step is to rasterize your type. (In PS Elements it is called "Simplify Layer.") To do this you will need to right click on your layer in the layer palette. Click on Rasterize Type. You will notice before you rasterize your type, you can change fonts or sizes. After you rasterize your type, you can no longer do this. It becomes like an element you get in a kit. You can resize it like you do a flower or piece of string, but it is no longer a text box so you can't change the font.

Now that our layer is rasterized, we can add a stroke. First you need to switch your foreground and background colors so your second color you designated for the stroke is on top. Make sure your word is still selected in the layers palatte and then go to your menu along the top of your screen and click on the edit tab. From there, go down to the "Stroke..." option.

Then this window pops up:

I generally like smaller strokes on my words, but you can play around with width and find your personal favorites. I typed in 7 px into the width box. You want to make sure under the location option "outside" is selected. Then press OK.

There you go. You have a stroke on your word. At this point you just need to put your word where you want it on your page like so:

I also prefer to add a shadow:

There you have it. Now you have a title that isn't made out of only one alpha. Here is another example for you:

Of course this tutorial can be applied to lots of different things. You can go more traditional and add strokes to pictures...and you can go even more crazy and add it to anything... If you have any questions, leave a comment and I'll do my best to answer them. AND...Make sure you try this out and upload your pages to the gallery so I can check out your work!

NSBR: Lime Ricki Swimwear

I don't know about you, but I have the HARDEST time finding a swimsuit I love. I think all in all over the past 3 years I've bought 5 suits in hopes to find the "perfect" one! Well, this year, I hit the jack pot!

Lime Ricki Swimwear is TOTALLY AWESOME!!! I'm a sucker for bright prints and colors (as you could probably tell from my scrapbook kits) and these guys have got the best patterns! It's also important for me to cover up my belly...promise ladies, no one wants to see that! Lime Ricki tankinis are long enough to cover your middle!!!

I ordered the "Hannah" top with the "Yellow Boy Shorts" bottoms and I am in love! I'm pretty small on top and it's hard for me to find a swimsuit that I'm not self concious in. The support is awesome but not over the top, and their sizing is spot on! I just got the same size I usually wear for my normal clothes and they both fit perfectly.

So...if you're in the market, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recomend Lime Ricki Swimwear!!!

Valenties Day Cookie Suckers

Just wanted to share these cute little cookie suckers I made with my kids yesterday!

To make them, you just use your normal sugar cookie recipe, divide the dough and color it different colors. Then after it's chilled, you make "snakes" as my kids call them, and coil them up! You can mix colors, twist colors, or just leave them plain! I like to roll sprinkles into mine to give them a little "sparkle"! Insert your sucker sticks, and bake!!! Super easy and the kids had a blast...so did I! :)

So, Landon (my 5 year old) has put himself in charge of updating our cute little countdown every day, it's a job he's very excited about and takes seriously. With fall in the air it was time to create a new "Fall-Filled" kit! October Road is EVERYTHING fall. I could almost smell the cinnamon and apples while I was making it!! I was down visiting my parents when I started on it and I asked my dad what I should name it. "October Road" is the name of a song written by James Taylor...one of his favorite artists, so dad...this one's for you! :) (and yes...just in case you're wondering, he gets my newsletter every month, so he WILL know!!!) Okay, enough with the naming of the kit...you want to see it, right??

Like I said...doesn't it just SCREAM fall time?? And I'm just in love with what my creative team did with it...I know I say it all the time, but they're amazing and they even whip out pages on short notice!!!

It's been FAR too long since I've created some girly goodness...I figured I was overdue! We recently "remodeled" my little girls room and the colors were PERFECT inspiration for a new kit! (once the room is totally finished, I'll post a picture!) Anyway...Daydream Believer has a whimsical, fresh, fun, bright feel...you name it. This kit is great for big girls and little girls alike!!! Plus I've got some great new coordinating alphabets to go with it as well!

And here's what my creative team came up with! They were TOTALLY fabulous to get pages done for me so quickly, they didn't have very much notice on this one...it's hot off the press!!!

Some fun new goodies just for you!! As you might tell, I'm kind of in baby mode...but I should be, right? I LOVED making this new baby kit! I loved the antique feel, and the name "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod" just seemed to fit perfectly. It's a favorite poem of our family, my dad even put it to music...I love it!! Anyway, you want to see the kit, right??
And even though I'm the only one in "Baby Mode" my creative team pulled of some FA-BU-LOUS pages with it!!

Hey there scrappers! I know it's August 3rd and NO NEW STUFF yet...so sorry! We just got back from a week long family vacation to California...kids AND hubby's first time, it was absolutely fabulous! So...I'm trying desparately to get my house back in order, laundry done, etc. and as soon as it's all caught up there will be some fun surprises for you! In the meantime, here are a few pictures I took on the trip! :)

First...a great view of the pool area at the hotel we stayed in...isn't it gorgeous?

Then...we decided beforehand that we wanted to take some family pictures while we were there, here's the best shot! :)

Next, one of ALL the "Golden Girls" (left to right) Me, Katie, our Mom, and our wonderful Sister-In-Law Melinda!

Just a couple of the kids playing on the beach...Abbie loved the ocean, Landon...not so much! He walked in and walked right back out and said "Mom, I HATE seaweed!" You and me both buddy!! :)

And then last but not least, the whole fam with Mickey Mouse!!

All in all it was a WONDERFUL trip and a MUCH needed vacation from the everyday!! Keep your eyes peeled this week for some fun new goodies...until then, Happy Scrapping!!

Can you even stand the excitement? I can't, so we'll get right to the point!! This week I've teamed up with the FABULOUS Brittney of "Britt-ish" designs (again!!) to bring you...

We couldn't be more thrilled! We are in love with it!!! And my wonderful Creative Team was SO creative with this one...you definitely don't need little super heroes running around to get good use out of this one, it's SO versatile!!

My Boy

Happy July everyone! Sorry the new release is a little late...it's been a crazy month!!! Exciting news though...we found out last Wednesday that baby #3 is going to be another boy!! We couldn't be more thrilled! So, in honor of the new little bundle of joy...I give you "My Boy"!!

I know...it's not very "baby-ish" but don't worry, that one is coming soon!!! And now look at what the AWESOME creative team (old and new) did with the kit!!!

And...I know it's a little late, but better late than never! I finally got around to making a new desktop!!I created it using the new "My Boy" kit, but still tried to keep it just a little "4th of July-ish" for those of us in the states!!

Well, I hope you had a great week, I sure did! :) I also hope you enjoyed the fun blog train my awesome CT put on for you, they did SUCH a great job! To start off, I'll introduce the new stuff...

"Trooper" as you can tell, is another one for the boys! :) I've had SUCH a positive response and LOTS of great feedback from all of the boy kits I've been doing lately, so I figured I'd keep it up! Don't worry though, there's still stuff for the girls out there too! :)

A Charity Collab

A collaboration kit, created by GG Digital Designs, Jeni Hopewell, and Megan Turnidge to benefit the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep organization. We have a friend who was recently touched by this organization and this kit is in memory of her sweet Alexis. The following is her experience:
